As per data from the power ministry, India’s power consumption surged by nearly 10% on a year-on-year basis to reach 70.66 billion units (BU) in the first half of April this year. This increase indicates a positive trend in economic activities and consumption patterns. Comparatively, power consumption in the country rose from 64.24 million units (MU) in the corresponding period last year to 70.66 BU during April 1-15, 2024.

During the first half of April, the peak power demand met, or the highest supply in a day, increased to approximately 218 GW, up from 206 GW recorded during the same period last year. Last year, the highest supply in a day for the entire month of April was approximately 216 GW.

The ministry has estimated that the peak power demand will reach 260 GW during the summer season (April to June), anticipating an extended duration of heat waves. Notably, the peak power demand reached an unprecedented peak of 243 GW in September 2023. This projection reflects the preparations being made for potentially increased electricity usage during the summer period, largely driven by prolonged periods of high temperatures.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted higher-than-average maximum temperatures across most regions of the country for the upcoming summer. However, experts note power consumption growth figures in in double digits reflects improvement in economic activities and change in consumption patterns.

They believe that consumers in India are following the trend seen in developed nations by increasing their energy usage on various appliances and gadgets. Additionally, they highlighted that the rise in electricity usage in the transportation sector, including electric buses, cars, rickshaws, and railways, which has altered consumption patterns and led to an increase in per capita consumption.
