Mahindra Thar was launched in India in October last year. Within six months of the launch, the car has crossed bookings of 50,000 units and there is a waiting period of up to five months.

However, the company recently said that they have fast-tracked the process and have increased the production capacity both at its Nashik facility and at the suppliers-end in order to help reduce the waiting period and meet the growing demand.

“We are overwhelmed with this unprecedented response that the All-New Thar has garnered and it has surpassed all our expectations. The waiting period for the model has been longer than expected,” said Veejay Nakra, Chief Executive Officer, Automotive Division, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.

The deliveries have also been affected due to a worldwide chip shortage.

“Booking of Mahindra Thar is taking place on the basis on national tally that works in a centralised way and the waiting period difference ranging from 9-11 months can be seen on the basis of  the variants buyer opt for,” said explained Vinkesh Gulati, President of  Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

He further added that the Petrol top model (Black), Diesel top model (Black), Deisel manual top model (Black) are the most sought-after variant taking the highest waiting period. But, If you book a manual transmission convertible top variant you can get it in about three months as its demand is not as high.

Mahindra Thar is available in petrol and diesel variants. A first-ever 2.0-litre Stallion turbo-petrol makes 150PS and 320 Nm while the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine puts out 130PS and 300 Nm. Both engine options have either a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic transmission, while 4×4 is standard across all models. The new Thar is based on Mahindra’s Gen3 platform.

As more and more load is plied on the vehicle, the ride quality improves immediately. It is priced from Rs 12.10 lakh to Rs 14.15 lakh (ex-showroom- Delhi).
