Hotstar taking cue from Netflix

After Netflix, Hotstar may also stop the password sharing feature. Recently Netflix has stopped the facility of sharing passwords with friends. Now Hotstar is planning to implement the policy of allowing its users to login from only 4 devices. With this, Hotstar wants to reduce password sharing. Currently, 10 devices can be logged in with a Netflix password.

Netflix has stopped sharing passwords with friends in more than 100 countries. However, you can still share passwords with family members on Netflix. In India, a premium account of the Disney Hotstar streaming service still allows logins on up to 10 devices. However, Disney Hotstar has tested its policy internally and plans to start implementing it later this year to limit logins to four for such accounts.

Five percent people share password:

Disney had not yet stopped the facility of password sharing for two reasons. The first is that Disney hoped that with this step they would be able to reach more people and later they would be able to convert their userbase into subscribers. The second reason was also that Hotstar did not want to inconvenience its premium customers by stopping password sharing. Hotstar had learned internally that only 5 per cent of its premium customers logged in from more than four devices.

Disney, Netflix, Amazon and billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s JioCinema have become hugely popular in India, with Media Partners Asia estimating that the region is set to become a $7 billion market by 2027. On the other hand, according to industry statistics, Hotstar is at the forefront of the market with about 50 million users. Netflix has benefited from turning off password sharing. More than 6 million subscribers have joined Netflix from all over the world. In such a situation, it can be expected that the userbase of Hotstar can also increase with this step.
