Orders through ONDC could entail delivery charges: Badrinath Mishra

The government’s flagship initiative Open Network For Digital Commerce (ONDC) which has created a level playing field for offline traders, might bring delivery charges in the future just like Swiggy and Zomato, said Badrinath Mishra, Vice President, Network Expansion, ONDC.

Speaking on the sidelines of ENGAGE’23 event held at New Delhi, said that food orders made on the ONDC platform could come with delivery charges in the future and added that “its totally up to the buyer and seller side apps to bring the delivery charges and they might bring it just like Swiggy and Zomato”.

So far, ONDC which is currently only operating in cities like Delhi and Bengaluru does not levy any delivery charges on orders made through its platform. Mishra also added that by December this year, ONDC will be expanded to other tier 1 and tier 2 cities by the end of this year.

Furthermore, ONDC has also entered the ride hailing space with Namma Yatre which is currently operating in Bengaluru and Kochi, he added.

Mishra also spoke extensively on how ONDC has created new opportunities for micro, small and medium enterprises by bringing them on online platforms thereby breaking the digital monopoly. In his own words, ONDC gave Amazon and Flipkart a “chill moment”.

About the event, he said that “ENGAGE’23 showcased the immense potential and talent within India’s startup ecosystem. The summit was a convergence of ideas, expertise, and opportunities”.
