After rising cases of black fungus and white fungus amid Covid-19 pandemic, Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad district on Monday reported first case of yellow fungus.

Reportedly, a patient being treated at ENT surgeon Dr Brij Pal Tyagi’s hospital in Ghaziabad was found infected with the yellow fungus which is considered more dangerous than white or black fungus.

Symptoms of yellow fungus?
Lethargy, weight loss, low appetite, or no appetite at all.

Sunken eyes, formation and leakage of pus form the wound thus slowing its healing process.

Organ failure often leading to necrosis.

Causes of infection
Poor hygiene is said to be the underlying cause of yellow fungus. However, other factors like high humidity and consuming rotten food items could be contributing elements.

Humidity in an enclosed environments shouldn’t go beyond 30-40% as high moisture in the air could act as a catalyst in the growth of fungus. Improper disposal of faeces can also promote fungal infection.

Treatment
Amphotericin B injection, which is an anti-fungal drug is used in the treatment of Yellow Fungus. If detected early, the infection can be controlled.

While only once case of Yellow Fungus has been reported in India until now, as many as 5,424 cases of Mucormycosis or Black Fungus were reported from 18 States and UTs of India until now.

“Out of 5,424 cases, 4,556 patients have a history of COVID-19 infection. 55% of the patients had diabetes,” Union Health Ministry said on May 24.
