Whatsapp

WhatsApp is one of the most used instant messaging app. Considering its popularity, some private banks like HDFC Bank, ICIC Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank have started WhatsApp banking. A host of bank account related services is being provided to consumers. While these services have made our life convenient, the risk of fraud looms large. If you don’t exercise caution while using these services, your bank account or e-wallet account could get hacked. Here are some useful tips to keep yourself at bay from such frauds:

Stick to the basics
Do not share your I-PIN, banking password or username with anyone. Especially do not reply to any unknown person contacting you through WhatsApp. Also, don’t tap on links or URLs from unknown sources.

Don’t share your OTP
You should never share your OTP on WhatsApp, no matter how small the amount is. Ideally, the person making the transaction should insert the OTP by himself or herself.

Don’t download media files from unknown number
If you receive media file from an unknown number, never download it. It could be a virus that may compromise your account details.

Do not use public Wi-Fi
Avoid using unknown or public Wi-Fi, this increases the chances of hacking. Many times hackers can hack your phone online with Wi-Fi. Avoid using WhatsApp on networks with public Wi-Fi spots. It is better to use your own mobile data. Also, disable auto download in your phone.

What to do if you lose your phone
If you lose your phone, deactivate WhatsApp as soon as you can. For this, you can email at support@whatsapp.com or login from another phone and then delete or deactivate WhatsApp.
