The National Payment Corporation of India introduced the RuPay card in 2012 and since then it has emerged as the most popular card in the country. Unlike Visa and Maestro Card, RuPay card is available only for domestic payments. Before the advent of RuPay cards, only foreign cards were used.

All the transactions with respect to RuPay cards happen in India, which ensures minimal transaction costs. Payments through RuPay cards are provided only through debit cards.

-Considering other debit card variants, the transaction costs of RuPay card are comparatively lower.

-To give a tough competition to the foreign cards, the government is also expected to introduce EMV cards, contactless credit and debit cards for easy transactions in this digital era.

Eligibility criteria and documents required to apply for a RuPay card

While applying for a RuPay card, one must need KYC documents like proof of address and identification along with 2 passport size photographs.

Any private, public, rural or co-operative banks can issue RuPay debit cards. 

One can open a savings account under the PMJDY scheme as well. Adding a RuPay card to the PMJDY has added more benefits like faster processing, lower transaction costs and greater privacy protection.

Customers can request for RuPay debit cards by filing a form in their nearest branch and submitting KYC documents.
