RBI Issues Circular On Levying Unfair Interest Charges On Customers

India has one of the largest number of debit cards in circulation. According to Reserve Bank of India data, the total number of debit cards in use at the end of February 2021 was 89.4 crore which is more than the total population of Europe.

While all banks issue debit cards, the largest bank in the country, State Bank of India, has issued the largest number of these cards with every third user carrying a SBI debit card.

According to the nature of the account one holds, SBI has seven types of debit cards to offer.

Classifications
The seven types of SBI debit cards are, SBI Classic and Maestro Debit Card, SBI Global International Debit Card, SBI Gold International Debit Card, SBI Platinum International Debit Card, SBI INTOUCH Tap & Go Debit Card, SBI Mumbai Metro Combo Card and SBI My International Debit Card.

The daily cash withdrawal limit in these cards are varies between Rs 20,000 and Rs 1 lakh.

Currently if a SBI customer wants to withdraw Rs 10,000 and above in a single transaction, the cardholder has to key in OTP sent on his/her registered mobile numbers along with their debit card PIN each time for security authentication.

Eligibility criteria
To get a debit card, you must have an account with SBI and should be above 21 years of age.
The eligibility criteria, annual fees and cash withdrawal limit and others are varies from card to card.

1. Classic Debit
SBI gives 1 reward point for every Rs. 200 you spend on shopping, dining, fuel, travel bookings or online spending. You will earn 50 points on your first transaction and 100 bonus points on your third transaction. For this card, the daily cash limit is Rs 20,000 and PoS limit is Rs 50,000.

The card holds an annual maintenance charge of Rs 125 + GST. The card replacement chargers are Rs. 300 + GST.

2. Global International
With this card you can enjoy the access to your account whenever and wherever you want. You can have access to your money from anywhere as it has 6 lakh merchant outlets in India, and over 30 million worldwide.

You can shop online and book movie tickets. The bank charges annual maintenance fees of Rs. 175 + GST.

You can earn 1 reward point on every Rs. 200 spent. Daily cash limit is Rs 50,000 and PoS limit is Rs 2 lakh for this card.

3. Gold International
You can earn 1 reward point for every Rs 200 spent. The bank charges an annual maintenance fee of Rs 175 + GST, and card replacement fees of Rs 300 +GST.

Daily cash limit is Rs 50,000 and PoS limit is Rs 2 lakh per day for this international debit card.

4. Platinum International
You can earn 1 reward point for every Rs 200 spent. The bank charges an annual maintenance fee of Rs 175 + GST, and card replacement fees of Rs. 300 +GST.

Daily cash limit is Rs 1,00,000 and PoS Limit is Rs 2,00,000 per day for this international debit card.

This card also offers free airport lounge access and is useful for international travel.

5. INTOUCH
This card is an international debit card that comes with contactless technology. A customer having this debit card can make electronic payments by waving the contactless card near PoS terminal.

You can earn 1 reward point for every Rs 200 spent. There are no issuance charges for the card, However, it charges an annual maintenance fee of Rs 175 + GST.

Daily cash withdrawal limit of this card is Rs 40,000 and PoS limit is Rs 75,000.

6. SBI Mumbai Metro Combo Card
This card is only for Mumbaikars. Skip the long queues at Mumbai metro stations and enjoy a hassle-free journey by SBI Mumbai Metro Combo Card.

Just tap the combo card to the entry gate of Mumbai metro and get straight access.

The card can also be used as a debit-cum-ATM card and also as a payment-cum-access card at Mumbai metro stations. Also, you can shop over 10 lakh merchant establishments, make payments online and also withdraw cash from ATMs.

Metro combo card comes preloaded with Rs 50. This card carries annual maintenance charges of Rs 175 + GST.

It carries a replacement charge of Rs 300 + GST and issuance charges of Rs 100. Daily cash withdrawn limit in this card is Rs 40,000 and PoS limit is Rs 75,000.

7. My International
The card allows for a maximum withdrawal of foreign currency equivalent to Rs 40,000 in a day, while it entitles the user to make PoS or online purchases worth Rs 75,000 a day.

The card is offered at an issuance charge of Rs 250 + GST, while an annual maintenance charge of Rs 175 + GST is levied from the second year onwards.

As the name suggests, this card is a global card. It can be conveniently used at over 30 million merchant outlets across the globe, for making online and offline purchases, such as booking movie tickets, paying bills, reserving travel tickets and more.
