Egg prices are on the boil!

Due to winter, egg consumption has gone up. Poultry death reported in the exporting hubs due to cold weather, has created huge demand-supply gap in the country.

Wholesale prices of eggs have gone up in the range of 5-11 per cent in last two months in the country due to demand supply gap. According to National Egg Co-Ordination Committee (NECC), wholesale egg prices have gone up by 11 per cent in New Delhi. In Chennai, prices are up 5 per cent. While, in Vijayawada, prices have gone up by 7 per cent. In Ludhiana, prices have zoomed 8 per cent. In Nammakal, Tamil Nadu which is a major egg exporting hub in the country, prices have augmented 5 per cent.

Andhra Pradesh, Chennai and Namakkal are major egg exporters in India. Not only eggs are exported from here outside the country, but also, other states import eggs from these hubs to fulfill demand.

Due to winter, egg consumption has gone up. Poultry death reported in the exporting hubs due to cold weather, has created huge demand-supply gap in the country. This has pushed prices up. According to NECC, prices are expected to remain elevated for some more days.

Rise in wholesale prices have started to reflect in retail prices as well.

In Chennai, egg prices have zoomed to Rs 7 per piece in the retail market. Retail egg prices have gone up by Rs 3 per piece to Rs 10 per piece in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. While, prices have gone up to Rs 8 from Rs 6 in last 15 days in Guwahati, Assam.

According to Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Parshottam Rupala, India is world’s third largest egg producer. In FY22, the country had produced 12,960 crore eggs.
