Electric vehicles: Ola’s Bhavish Aggarwal counters Elon Musk and Hyundai

Bhavish Aggarwal, Ola’s co-founder and CEO, on July 27 said he strongly disagrees with Tesla’s Elon Musk and Hyundai’s SS Kim’s views on imported EVs.

Kim, Managing Director and CEO, Hyundai Motor India, had backed Tesla’s call for lower duties in India on imported electric vehicles.

“Strongly disagree with both. Let’s have confidence in our ability to build indigenously and also attract global OEMs to build in India, not just import. We won’t be the first country to do so!,” he tweeted.

Bhavish’s tweet assumes significance as Musk’s statement on India’s import duties being the highest in the world kickstarted the discourse which holds the key to future mobility advancements.

According to a Reuters report, Tesla wrote to a letter to Niti Aayog seeking reduction in taxes on imports of fully assembled electric cars to 40%.

Bhavish-led Ola Electric plans to invest $2 billion as it looks to set up more than 1 lakh charging stations across 400 cities.

Earlier this month, Ola Electric opened the bookings for its upcoming electric scooter. The scooter is available for booking at the amount of Rs 499.

The electric scooter would be available in three different variants and one of them would be the Series S. Ola Electric will manufacture this scooter at its plant in Tamil Nadu.
