Mukesh Ambani’s Rs 75,000-crore push for green energy

Reliance Industries chairman, Mukesh Ambani on September 3 reiterated his stand towards bolstering efforts for creating sustainable and renewable sources of energy in India. While addressing the ‘International Climate Summit 2021- Powering India’s Hydrogen Eco system’, Ambani said that a massive giga complex is being set up in Gujarat that will work towards renewable energy and production of Green Hydrogen.

“We have started developing the Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Complex over 5,000 acres in Jamnagar. It will be amongst the largest integrated renewable energy manufacturing facilities in the world. This complex will have four giga factories, which cover the entire spectrum of renewable energy. The first will be an integrated solar photovoltaic module factory. The second will be an advanced energy storage battery factory. The third will be an electrolyser factory for the production of Green Hydrogen. The fourth will be a fuel cell factory for converting hydrogen into motive and stationary power,” said Ambani.

He further added that RIL will invest close to Rs 75,000 crore in these initiatives over the next three years.

Significance of Green Hydrogen

Ambani lauded the significance of Green Hydrogen in the context of reducing India’s dependence on fossil fuels. He said that Green Hydrogen is zero-carbon energy which can play a fundamental role in the world’s decarboniasation plans. According to Ambani, the new green revolution can make India self-reliant in energy production and Green Hydrogen is a key to the country’s future.

As per News18, Reliance Industries has already collaborated with US-based Chart Industries to form the Indian Hydrogen Alliance (IH2A) for developing green and blue hydrogen in India along with commercialising it. By forming IH2A, both the organisations are leading the way to further develop hydrogen technology.

During his address, Ambani also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day speech where the PM launched the Green Hydrogen Mission for India.

Referring to PM Modi’s goal to reach 450GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, Ambani said that Reliance will establish and enable at least 100GW of solar energy by 2030. He also added that the new initiative will create a pan-India network of kilowatt and megawatt scale solar energy producers who can produce Green Hydrogen for local consumption.
