New BH-series registration to ease transfer of vehicles across states
The assignment of the new registration mark is done after the road tax on a pro-rata basis is paid in the new state
In a move to ensure seamless transfer of vehicles across states, a new registration for new vehicles called Bharat Series (BH-series) has been introduced by the road transport ministry. In a notification, the government has relieved vehicle owners from the re-registration process when they shift or relocate from one state or union territory to another. It further added that an IT-based solution is needed for the vehicle registration process, especially for the re-registration of a vehicle while moving to another state.
At present, a person is allowed to keep a vehicle for 12 months in any state other than the state where it is registered. The owners have to get such vehicles re-registered before the expiry of 12 months. Currently, a passenger vehicle owner has to take a no-objection certificate from the parent state for getting a new registration mark in the new state.
New rules to come into effect by September 15, 2021
According to the notification, the motor vehicle tax levied by the state and union territories at the time of registration in respect to BH-series non-transport vehicles will be 8% in case of vehicles costing up to Rs 10 lakh, 10% in case of vehicles costing between Rs 10-20 lakh and 12% in case of vehicles costing above 20 lakh.
YY BH #### XX will the format of the BH-series registration mark, wherein YY denotes the year of first registration, BH is code for Bharat Series, #### is the random four-digit number and XX are the two alphabets.
The new rules also called Central Motor Vehicles (Twentieth Amendment) Rules, 2021, shall come into force with effect from September 15, 2021. The registration mark for the BH-series vehicle will be generated randomly through the portal. Also, the assignment of the new registration mark is done after the road tax on a pro-rata basis is paid in the new state.
It further said that a 2% extra charge will be levied for diesel vehicles, while electric vehicles will be charged 2% minus tax. However, if the vehicle bears the BH-series registration mark, the motor vehicle tax shall be levied electronically.
