By bringing in private participation, we are going to monetize it (assets) better, says finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman

Union Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday will meet chief ministers and state finance ministers to discuss measures to attract private investments to help boost the economy.

The government on Monday announced a Rs 6 lakh crore National Monetisation Plan (NMP) for monetising infrastructure assets across sectors from rail to road to power. NMP will list out the Centre’s infrastructure assets which will be sold over the next four years.

Addressing the launch, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said “National Motenisation Pipeline talks about brownfield assets where investment is already being made, where there are assets either languishing or not fully monetized or under-utilized.”

“By bringing in private participation, we are going to monetize it (assets) better and with whatever resource that you obtained by monetization, you are able to put in for further investment into infrastructure building,” she added.

In her budget speech, finance minister Sitharaman said that monetising operating public infrastructure assets was a very crucial financing option for new infrastructure construction.

NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant said projects have been identified to monetise assets over the next four years.
