Will Netflix subscription plans get costlier in India?

The Over The Top (OTT) behemoth Netflix is all geared up for fresh round of subscription plan price hike to boost profitability.

The Over The Top (OTT) behemoth Netflix is all geared up for fresh round of subscription plan price hike to boost profitability. Albeit, how much will be the price hike, it’s not confirmed. If it happens, it will be second round of price hike in matter of just four months. It was in October 2023 that Netflix last time raised prices.

Will Netflix hike India subscription plan prices?

Reportedly, the OTT player is not looking to hike the subscription plans in India. The price hike will be limited to select developed countries, a strategy adopted by the streaming giant in October, last year, as well.

Netflix has stuck with no price hike and focus on gathering more and more subscribers strategy in India.

Last revision in India 

In its last revision in India, the US based streaming giant had cut prices of subscription in December 2021. The price of basic subscription plan was cut from Rs 499 to Rs 199. While, the OTT giant had set price of mobile only plan for customers in India at Rs 149 per month.

Current subscription plans of Netflix in India

In India, Netflix’s cheapest plan is mobile-only plan of Rs 149 per month. The next is Rs 199 basic plan, followed by Rs 499 standard and Rs 649 premium plan.

According to US-based research and wealth management firm, AllianceBernstein, Netflix had 65 lakh subscribers in India as of October 2023 which constituted 4.5 per cent market share of India’s OTT market. The India operations of the OTT platform are profitable.
