Over the years, Bollywood has created an image of women on the 70mm screen doing the same stereotypical roles. But all of that has changed in the past few years.

Bollywood has over the years come up with movies that have reimagined women and portrayed them in bold and unconventional roles. On International Women’s Day, Money9 has curated a list of five women-centric movies that you could binge-watch with your girlfriends.

Queen

“Main India se hoon, Rajouri. Rajouri suna hai? Apne honeymoon pe akele aayi hoon!”

This one dialogue of Rani, played by Kangana Ranaut sums up the gist of the movie. In this movie, the queen discovers herself and takes control of her life. Because no one else can, right?

Lipstick under my Burkha

“Parde Bade Mote They, Andhere Main Rosie Ko Koi Dekh Nahi Paata,”

This movie gives us a perfect glimpse of a woman’s life. Alankrita Shrivastava brilliantly tells the story of four women from different age groups who have to hide their authentic selves to not get discarded by society. Their quest for freedom in the movie holds our attention.

Parched

“Yatra naryastu pujyante, ramante tatra devta.” which translates to “where women are worshipped, there gods rejoice.”

It is a powerful women-centric movie that entangles the stories of four female protagonists discovering their sexuality. This movie reminds us how in India women are still objectified and their sexual desires are treated as impious.

Raazi

“Agar vo galti hai, toh desh ki ifaazat ke liye beton ko Fauj mein daalna bhi galti hai…”

Meghna Gulzar’s spy movie led by Alia Bhatt has straight away made its way into our hearts. The movie doesn’t dive into a lot of technicalities. Alia Bhatt’s brilliant performance was enough to keep us glued to the screens till the end.

English Vinglish

“Mard khana banaye toh kala hai. Aurat banaye, toh uska farz hai.”

We wish if Sridevi could make more movies like this for us. It was Sridevi’s comeback movie. This movie tells us that a woman is a lot more than a mother or a wife.
