This year Apple unveiled its iPad Pro (2021), alongside its latest iMac version, during the spring loaded Apple event held in April. The new iPad Pro comes in two sizes— 11-inch and 12.9-inch. The biggest surprise is its ultra-powerful Apple M1 processor, also used in MacBook Air (2020), Mac Mini (2020), and iMac (2021). The latest iPad Pro also comes in Wi-Fi-only and 5G variants. Its 128GB default internal storage can also be configured to up to 2TB, with added costs.

The latest iPad Pro is compatible with Apple pencil (2nd Generation); magic keyboard and the smart keyboard folio.

Apple has already started shipping it from the second half of May.

Price

In India, the vanilla 11inch variant costs Rs 71,900 and the 12.9-inch device is priced at Rs 99,900. For the 11-inch iPad Pro (2021) variants with the full embellishment of 5G and 2TB storage, the price is Rs 1,84,900, while for a similar 12.9-inch version, it is as much as Rs 2,12,900.

Specifications and features

Camera

The latest iPad Pro features a 12MP wide-angle front-facing camera, which Apple calls “Center Stage”. It can track multiple users and zoom in on them during video calls. The back camera set-up has been kept the same as the 2020 iPad Pro: 12MP+10MP+LiDAR. It can record 4K 60fps videos using front and rear cameras. There is a true depth camera, too, for Face ID user authentication.

Processor

The M1 features an 8-core CPU and an 8-core GPU. Apple claims that M1 has a 50% faster CPU and 40% faster GPU than the iPad Pro (2020)’s A12Z processor. Due to its 5nm chip built and the powerful GPU, the M1 chipset can drive 6K HDR displays like the Apple Pro Display XDR. It also has a 16-core Apple Neural Engine and an advanced image signal processor.

Memory and storage

The iPad Pro (2021) has up to 16GB RAM (8GB default), expandable up to 2TB that’s twice as fast as the previous-generation iPad Pro. The entry-level variant has 128GB storage, which can be configured with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB of storage.

Charging

The new tablet has a Thunderbolt 4 USB Type-C port, which can be used for charging, data transfer, connecting accessories, and 6K HDR display output. It has a 40Gbps data transfer rate, similar to all modern MacBooks, iMacs, iMac Pros, Mac Pros, and Mac Minis.

Screen

The 11-inch version uses the same IPS LCD screen of the iPad Pro (2020), while the 12.9-inch variant has a brand-new Liquid Retina XDR Display with Mini-LED backlighting. Apple claims that this display has 10,000 Mini LEDs and 2,500 local dimming zones. It has a peak brightness of 1,600 nits (1,000 nits sustained), improved contrast ratio and deeper black levels. The new screen has a 120Hz variable refresh rate, along with Wide Colour Gamut, True Tone and HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision.

Speaker

The same quad-speaker set-up of last year’s model has been maintained in the latest Apple tablet, along with the five studio-quality microphone setup.

Connectivity

The new iPad Pro features GPS, eSIM, and Bluetooth 5.0, along with 5G and Wi-Fi 6.

Battery

This year’s 11-inch iPad Pro has a 28.65WHr battery, while the 12.9-inch variant is powered by a 40.88WHr battery. Both, however, can last up to 10 hours of video playback on a single charge.
