Due to the heavy rains in North India, the prices of vegetables have skyrocketed. Now the effect of rain will also be seen on the production of apples. Last week’s rains in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir have severely damaged apple orchards. After this, now the production of apples in these states may be reduced to half. This is worrying because these two states have the highest production of apples. If the apple production in the coming season drops as is feared, apple too may become dream for the common man.
Three fourths of the country’s production comes from the Kashmir Valley. Every year 21-29 lakh tonnes of apples are produced in Kashmir. Apple growers in Kashmir have said that their production this season will be less than half of the year-ago season due to incessant rains. According to the growers, the production of apples in Himachal Pradesh is also expected to be halved this season due to damage caused by heavy rains. Due to this, the possibility of apple becoming expensive has increased.
Vegetable prices hit bu rain
After tomatoes, there has been a huge jump in the prices of capsicum, okra, brinjal and bottle gourd. During the last one week, the price of capsicum has increased more than 3 times in Delhi’s Azadpur mandi. On July 4, the wholesale price of capsicum in Azadpur Mandi was Rs 24 per kg. Which has increased to 80 rupees per kg on 13 July. During this period, the price of brinjal has increased by 48 percent and the price of okra has increased by 36 percent. Everyday vegetables including bottle gourd are being sold at Rs 70 per kg.
