Constructing a building of a house goes through various stages and painting or colouring is the last stage. It not only gives a good look to the house but also protects it from rough weather. Painting always depends on our personal choice. Because, colours have a direct effect on our mood and emotion.  That’s why it is important to know mantra of right selection of paint and the right way to paint your dream home!

Planning is necessary before getting painting  because there are many types of expenses involved, such as expenses on paint, putty, plaster of Paris (PoP) and labour cost.  You should check how many parts of the house you want to paint and what type of paint you want to use. Because only then you will have an estimate of material to be used, labour cost and time required to get your house painted. Only then will you know the actual cost of painting your house.

Climatic conditions are different in India. In such a case, it is important to choose paint according to the weather of your area. There are many types of paints available in the market. These include white wash, distemper paint, oil paint, cement paint, emulsion paint, enamel paint and lustre paint.

White wash is an old and cheapest way of painting. It uses lime. However, its finishing is not smooth. Also, it is not very durable and it is very difficult to remove stains.

Exterior paints  not only enhance the beauty of the house from outside but also withstand rain, storm and sunlight. Use cement paint or emulsion paint on exterior walls. Emulsion paint lasts longer on walls, dries quickly and withstands all weather conditions. If your budget is low, you can use cement paint or get white wash done. At present, you will find different types of exterior paints of many companies in the market that you can apply on exterior side of walls of your home.

Clean the walls well before painting so that dust and dirt are removed. Check for sealing in the walls. Find a way to eliminate it.  Before painting, make sure that there is no undulation i.e. wave or unevenness in the walls.  Get it leveled with putty. Otherwise, no matter how expensive the paint is, the finishing will not be smooth. After some time, cracks or peeling will start appearing.

Always use washable paint on interior i.e. inside walls. This will keep the beauty of the walls intact because stains can be easily cleaned on wall interior. This saves the cost of repainting your walls again and again. You can use oil paint, plastic paint or emulsion paint for room walls.  For glossy and premium look, you can use enamel and lustre paint but these are a bit expensive. If your budget is low, you can use distemper.

The size of the room matters a lot in colour selection. In a small room, you should use light colour paint instead of dark. This makes the room look bigger. Take a sample before you buy the paint. See if the color fits in the house according to the lighting you have used. Keep sufficient lighting arrangements with colour selection so that beauty comes out. Choose the colour of the paint keeping in mind the furniture, wardrobe, floor tiles.

According to civil engineers, you should make sure that the paint which you would use on interior walls must have minimal chemical compounds like lead and cadmium. These chemicals go into the body when you breathe and spoil your health. You can get diagnosed with diseases like cancer and TB. Chemical information is written on the paint box.

The use of wallpaper instead of paint in rooms has increased a lot these days. Their costing is low and there is freedom to change whenever you want. Use texture paint to highlight one wall. It gives a very premium look. However, their price is much higher than normal paint. Cement paint can be used instead of texture paint if the budget is low.

If you keep these things in mind while painting your home, the paint will last longer and you will also save money. There are some other tips that you need to keep in mind. Choose an experienced contractor if you want the paint to last longer and have good finishing. Find out about his previous work. Use a roller instead of a brush for good finishing. Only get the paint done after the plaster is completely dry otherwise cracks would start appearing.
