The CBDT on Thursday extended the last date of filing income tax returns to December 31, 2021, from the already extended date of September 30.
A press release issued by the finance ministry said “on consideration of difficulties reported by the taxpayers and other stakeholders in filing of Income Tax Returns and various reports of audit for the Assessment Year 2021-22 under the Income-tax Act, 1961(the “Act”), Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has decided to further extend the due dates for filing of Income Tax Returns and various reports of audit for the Assessment Year 2021-22.”
The due date of furnishing of return by salaried people for the assessment year 2021-22, which was July 31, 2021, and extended to September 30, 2021, will now be December 31, 2021.
For assessees who need to file audited accounts, the alst date has been extended to January 15, 2022 from October 31, 2021. The original date was September 30, 2021.
Infosys under fire
The income tax department launched its new portal for filing returns on June 7 this year. Several users faced trouble in logging on to the portal. Many also complained that they could not reset their passwords. To resolve the matter, the finance ministry asked the vendor Infosys Technologies to set things right so that people are able to file the returns in time.
When things did not improve, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman summoned Infosys CEO Salil Parekh and set a deadline of September 15 to get the portal in order.
On September 8, the ministry said the portal was performing better and almost 1.9 crore assessees had filed returns till date from the portal.
