It has also asked states to explore the possibility of placing night curfews in areas which have high positivity rates and assured additional supply of vaccines.

As the number of Covid-19 cases are rising in the country again, the Centre has asked Maharashtra and Kerala to consider night curfews in areas with high numbers, The Economic Times reported on Friday. In the middle of August cases had fallen to a five month low of 25,166, but cases have risen sharply in the last four days, especially in Kerala that recently celebrated Onam. India has reported more than 40,000 new cases in the last three days. The country has the most number of cases after United States.

More efforts needed to tackle rising infections

In the past week Kerala has accounted for more than half of the total cases, with 60% of the new cases coming from the state. This was followed by 16% in Maharashtra.

The Ministry of Home affairs in a statement said that adequate intervention would be required in geographical areas having higher infections, through measures like contract tracing, vaccination drives and Covid appropriate behaviour. In order to control the spread of infections, more efforts would be required, it added.

It has also asked states to explore the possibility of placing night curfews in areas which have high positivity rates and assured additional supply of vaccines.
