National Doctors Day: 1492 modern medicine doctors have sacrificed their lives in the Covid-19 pandemic, according to IMA

India has lost more than 1500 eminent doctors in the fight against Coronavirus pandemic, Indian Medical Association (IMA) said on Thursday and hailed the unparalleled service of medical professionals on the occasion of Doctors’ Day on July 1.

On National Doctors’ Day, the country lauds the role played by the community of healthcare workers who have been at the forefront of battling the Covid-19 disease outbreak. The IMA has declared ‘Save the Saviours’ as the theme of this year’s National Doctors’ Day, which is observed on July 1.

About 798 doctors died during the second wave

Amidst the prevalence of the Covid-19 pandemic, 798 doctors died during the second wave of Covid-19 across the country of which maximum 128 doctors lost their lives in Delhi, followed by Bihar at 115, according to a ANI report. Quoting the official data from IMA, the report noted that the number of doctors who lost their lives in the pandemic in Delhi stands at 128, followed by Bihar at 115 and Uttar Pradesh at 79.

As many as 748 doctors died during the first wave of the pandemic.

In addition to the physical impact of being infected, doctors have also had to fight the emotional trauma of continuing to work without any leave, despite having a close relative infected with Covid-19.

Eminent doctors passed away

Padma Shri awardee and eminent cardiologist Dr. KK Aggarwal died of Covid-19. He was the former national president of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and was actively helping the community against the deadly virus.

Dr Ashok Panagariya, a prominent neurologist and Padma Shri recipient also died of post-Covid complications.
