According to the ministry's notification, the renewal of a 15 year old car will cost Rs 5,000 as against the current fee of Rs 600.

The Road and Transport Ministry has decided on the registration renewal fees for all old vehicles and has also mentioned the registration fees for new vehicles, under the vehicle scrapping scheme, which comes into effect from April 1,2022. Last month, the scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with an aim to control India’s impact on the environment by isolating and recycling cars that don’t meet pollution standards.

According to the ministry’s notification issued on Tuesday, the renewal of a 15-year-old car will cost Rs 5,000 against the current fee of Rs 600. But for the vehicle owners of Delhi and its surrounding areas, the hike would bear no impact as diesel and petrol vehicles that are more than 10 and 15 years old, respectively, cannot be run in the city. The renewal fees of old two-wheelers will be increased from Rs 300 to Rs 1,000.

The statement also said that the fee for the issue of certificate of registration for a new vehicle, purchased against the authority of the Certificate of Deposit (CoD) issued by a registered vehicle scrapping for a vehicle being scrapped, will be waived as an incentive.

Also, in case of delay in applying for renewing certificate of registration, an additional fees of Rs 300 would be levied in case of private vehicles. For commercial vehicles Rs 500 shall be levied forthe delay.

Renewal of registration fees increased for personal vehicles

Adding to that, to encourage vehicle owners to discard old and polluting vehicles which have high maintenance and fuel consumption costs, the ministry has:

i) Increased the fee for conducting fitness test and renewal of fitness certificate for motor vehicles more than 15 years old.

ii) Hiked the fitness certificate fees for transport vehicles more than 15 years old and,

iii) Increased the renewal of registration fee for personal vehicles (non transport vehicles) more than 15 years old.
