Before the Lok Sabha 2024 elections, everything is becoming cheaper in the country. After petrol, diesel and CNG prices, the government has now decided to reduce prices of some medicines in the country. The government body, National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), has reduced prices of those medicines which doctors prescribe for treatment of diabetes, body pain, liver issues, infections and allergies. As a result, some of these medicines have become cheaper by  as much as half.

For example, the price of dapagliflozin metformin hydrochloride which is used to control glucose level in the liver of a human body has been reduced by almost 50 per cent to Rs 16 per tablet from Rs 30 per tablet. While, antacid anti gas gel will now be sold at Rs 0.56/ml. Earlier, its price was Rs 2.57/ml. On the other hand, price of combination capsules atorvastatin, clopidogrel and aspirin has been reduced by more than 50 per cent to Rs 13.84 per capsule from Rs 30.

The NPPA has also reduced prices of those medicines which are used in treatment of asthma and the improvement of lung function. These medicines are budesonide and formoterol, the retail price of which has been fixed at Rs 6.62 per dose.

The drug price regulator has reduced prices of a total of 41 essential drugs and also revised ceiling prices of seven scheduled formulations. The nodal body had sat for a meeting to take this decision on May 10, 2024.

NPPA is national drug pricing regulator vested with responsibility of revision of drug and formulation prices in the country. Time to time, it keeps revising drug prices.
