India’s Olympic athletes to get free bitcoins too

From free pizzas to cash prizes, medal-winning Indian athletes in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics are getting richly recognised. Adding to that, cryptocurrencies are going to be a part of their gifts.

Bitbns, an Indian cryptocurrency exchange has offered to open a Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum for India’s silver medal winner in the 49kg women’s weightlifting, Mirabai Chanu and bronze medal winner in women’s single badminton, P V Sindhu.

The exchange will start an SIP account with Rs 2 lakh for gold medal winners, Rs 1 lakh for silver medal winners, and Rs 50,000 for bronze medal winners, the company said in a press statement.

Once the athletes complete the KYC (Know Your Customer) norms, they can access the amount which would be auto credited to their accounts. Bitbns said that the SIP would be structured for a 3-5 year period, thereby offering them a seamless exposure to the digital asset while enabling them to earn a fixed source of income in the long term through the platform.

Gauarv Dahake, chief executive officer, Bitbns said, “Bitcoins and Ethereum have been the best-performing assets in the last decade, and have given exceptional returns and we aim to get our winners indulge in this rewarding journey. Our Olympians are the personification of sheer grit, valour and commitment and the sense of pride they gift us is immeasurable. This is a small gesture from us to gratify them in our own way.”
