EPF or Employee provident Fund written on black slate with Indian Currency notes and Coin.

From September 1, Aadhaar has to be mandatorily linked with each and every Employee Provident Fund (EPF) account. If it is not done, the employer’s contribution to the EPF account would stop. The deadline to complete the linkage of Aadhaar with the account was earlier set on June 1, which was later extended to September 1 by EPFO. They would be unable to file electronic challan cum return (ECR) for EPF accounts that are not seeded with Aadhaar.

Those who do not link their 12-digit Aadhaar number with their PF accounts will also lose out on services like availing Covid-19 advances and insurance benefits linked to PF accounts.

On June 1, EPFO sent a message to every concerned person and made it clear that Aadhaar seeding is mandatory for all EPF accounts. But later they have extended the date to another three months to September 1.

EPFO also directed the employers to get the UAN of all EPF account holders’ Aadhaar verified.

EPFO statement

“Dear Employer, with the coming into force of section 142 of the Code on Social Security, 2020, the ECR shall be allowed to be filed only for those members, whose Aadhaar numbers are seeded and verified with the UANs,” said EPFO.

On the other hand, EPFO has also notified that the last date of implementation for filing ECR electronic challan cum receipt (or PF return) with Aadhaar verified UANs was extended to September 1, 2021, and it said that employers, who have linked their PF UAN, can only file ECR.

Aadhaar can be seeded online, through the ‘Umang’ mobile app or by OTP verification. It generally takes 2-3 minutes.
