New investors registration on NSE crosses 50 lakh-mark in 4 months

National Stock of India Ltd (NSE) has witnessed the number of new investor registrations crossed 50 lakh in less than 4 months of the ongoing financial year 2021-22. The exchange witnessed 2.5 times year-on-year growth in the number of registration during April-July 2021.

From the geographical presence point of view, as much as 36% of new investors registered are from the North Indian States, While the West Indian States accounts for 30%, Southern Indian States accounts for 22% and the remaining 12% are from the East Indian States.

Overall, 53% of new investors registered are from states beyond the top 5 ranked states. The overall NSE’s registered investor base has now crossed 4.5 crores.

Earlier, the registration of new investors increased to an all-time high of 15 lakh in June 2021. There has been a slight increase from May 2021 and a significant rise from 10 lakh in April 2021. Except for a few months, the total number of new registrations maintained a positive trajectory on average over the last two fiscal years. NSE’s monthly registration jumped up seven times from 223 thousand in June 2019 to 15 lakh in June 2021 with a CAGR of 8%.

Earlier, NSE in its monthly magazine Market Pulse said that even as the distributional pattern across regions has changed slightly over the last two years, Northern and Western regions remained to be the front runners in terms of the total number of registrations over the last two fiscal years. In June 2021, the Northern part contributed around 37% of total registration which is around 6 percentage points lower than June 2020. In contrast, the share has declined in Western and Southern regions from 33% to 30% and 27% to 21% between June 2020 and June 2021. This was partially taken over by the Eastern region with a share of 12% in June 2021 as compared to 9% in the previous year.
