Sensex, Nifty end flat amid volatility; midcaps, smallcaps outperform

Domestic equity benchmarks recovered from day’s low to end with minor losses on Wednesday tracking losses in index majors Infosys, Reliance Industries and TCS amid a negative trend in global peers.

After hitting intra-day low of 57,924.48, The BSE Sensex closed 29.22 points or 0.05% lower at 58,250.26. The NSE Nifty ended at 17,353.50, down 8.60 points or 0.05%. The 50-share gauge dropped to an intra-day low of 17,254.20 during the session.

Nestle, closing over 2% lower, was the top Sensex laggard followed by Maruti, Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Auto, TCS and L&T. Kotak Bank, Titan, NTPC and Sun Pharma were among the gainers.

Sectoral indices on the NSE ended mixed. Nifty IT, down nearly 1%, was the top sectoral laggard followed by Nifty Media, Nifty Auto and Nifty Pharma. On the other hand, Nifty Private Bank, Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty Metal, Nifty Bank, and Nifty Financial Services ended in the green.

The overall market breadth was positive as 1,812 stocks on the BSE advanced, while 1,366 declined and 165 were unchanged.

In Asia, stock exchanges in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Seoul ended in the red while Tokyo closed higher.
