Chennai witnessed yet another thrilling contest and the season’s first super over. In the 20th game of the season, SRH fielded a well-balanced Rs 41.15 Crore team to overhaul the winning run of Rs 57.65 Crore Delhi Capitals. And with their undying spirit, they nearly managed to succeed as well.

After winning the toss, DC openers Prithvi Shaw 53(39) and Shikar Dhawan 28(26) batted freely to put up 81 runs partnership for the 1st wicket. Rishabh Pant 37(27) and Steve Smith 34*(25) put together 58 runs that provided a fillip to take the score to 159/4.

Chasing the target of 160, Jonny Bairstow was at his blistering best scoring 38(18) while skipper David Warner’s poor form continued as he could manage only 6 runs off 8 balls. Kane Williamson 66*(51) played the lone hand in the chase as Avesh Khan (3/34) and Axar Patel (2/26) kept chipping at the wickets. The rest of the SRH batting was a sorry sight, except for Jagadeesha Suchit. He smashed 2 fours and 1 six to score 14*(6) that took the game to the super over.

Batting first in the super over, form suddenly deserted Williamson while Warner’s poor form stuck to him. The pair could only score 7 runs off Axar Patel’s super over.
Rashid Khan took the game to the last ball for SRH, but the target was knocked off by Pant and Dhawan to register DC’s 3rd win in a row.

With 4 wins from 5 matches, DC is placed 2nd in the points table while SRH languishes at the 7th position with only one win from 5 matches.

Here is a look at the top-performing and non-performing assets from the match:

PERFORMERS

Prithvi Shaw (Rs 1.20 Crore): In this year’s IPL, Shaw has looked calm and is scoring heavily. In this innings, Shaw took the SRH bowlers to the cleaners with 7 fours and 1 six. Scoring the majority of the runs in the 81 runs opening partnership with Dhawan, Shaw set the tone for DC in the match. In this season Shaw has scored 2 fifties already, yielding rich ROI for DC. For his blistering 53 off 39 balls, he was awarded the man of the match award.

Kane Willaimson (Rs 3 Crore): The Kiwi stalwart has truly arrived in this year’s IPL, albeit late. After waiting in the wings for 3 matches, Willaimson played his 2nd unbeaten innings in a row. In an innings of finesse and classical stroke play he almost managed to take SRH over the line. Though wickets kept tumbling around him, Williamson kept SRH’s chances alive and scored 66* off 51 balls with 8 boundaries. His form will be the key, for SRH to stage any sort of comeback in the tournament.

LAGGARDS

David Warner (Rs 12.50 Crore): In this season, Warner has managed only 136 runs from 5 matches, a below-average performance by his standards. SRH needed a score of substance from their captain in this crucial match but Warner failed once again. The skipper managed to score only 6 runs off 8 balls and left too much to do for the inexperienced middle order. In the super over he had a chance to redeem himself but could manage only 2 runs from 3 balls. As a captain, Warner has lost 4 matches out of 5 this season.

Rashid Khan (Rs 9 Crore): The spin wizard from Afghanistan is yet to prove his mettle in this year’s IPL. In 5 matches he has managed only 6 wickets and scored only 17 runs. In this match, Rashid gave way 31 runs in 4 overs with only 1 wicket and was dismissed for a golden duck. The SRH management handed the super over with lots of faith to Khan, but he failed to defend the cause for the team.

In their next game, DC faces 3rd placed RCB on 27th April. Whereas SRH faces the table leader CSK on 28th April.
