Make sure you upgrade your iPhone to iOS 14.5

When Apple launched iOS 14.5 update for iPhone 6s and later models last week, its App Tracking Transparency feature garnered a lot of attention.

Pushing the bar for the privacy and security of its customers, Apple’s latest feature makes it mandatory for application developers to seek permission for tracking users across apps on any iOS device. You can choose to either accept or decline permission to these apps. This will also have an implication on all third-party apps on the App Store.

While privacy experts applauded the move from Apple, social networking platforms like Facebook criticised it stating it could negatively their revenue model. The new feature triggered such harsh criticism because Facebook inevitable feeds on user data.

In its defence, Apple maintained that user privacy was of paramount importance and people must be aware about who gets access to their personal data.

“Users should know when their data is being collected and shared across other apps and websites — and they should have the choice to allow that or not. App Tracking Transparency in iOS 14 does not require Facebook to change its approach to tracking users and creating targeted advertising, it simply requires they give users a choice,” the company was quoted as saying in media reports.

Enabling App Tracking Transparency in your device

First, make sure to upgrade your iPhone to iOS 14.5 and then follow these steps to set up the new feature:

– Go to phone settings

– Scroll down to ‘Privacy’ and select it

– Choose ‘Tracking’ right on top

– Click on the toggle to select ‘Allow apps to request to track’

– You can also choose to enable this feature for individual apps. To do so, select the main toggle and manually select the apps you’d want to give access for or deny tracking

The iOS 14.5 update also comes with other exciting features like enabling AirTags –the new iPhone accessory that provides a private and secure way to easily locate items that matter most to you will be available on you iPhone/iPad once the device is upgraded to its latest version. Apart from this, Apple is adding support for dual 5G SIMs which was in its beta testing stage for last few months.
