Coal crisis: Will you face more power cuts?

India is facing a looming power crisis as stocks of coal in power plants have depleted to unprecedentedly low levels and states are warning of power blackouts.

Here’s all you need to know about it.

Several states like Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu have recently flagged off the issue of shortage of coal.

India is the world’s second-largest consuming country, after China. Coal is the primary fuel covering 70% of the country’s consumption needs. India imports around 300-400 million tonnes of coal from Indonesia, Australia and South Africa. Coal India produces about 600 million tonnes of coal for domestic consumption in the country.
