The deadline to file your income tax returns is September 30,2021. However, since the new income tax portal is still facing issues, should the deadline be extended? Money9 Helpline hosted tax expert Gauri Chadha to resolve your queries on how to be ready for all situations related to income tax.

Edited excerpts

Anamitra Biswas, South Kolkata: My IT lawyer has postponed filing my ITR stating a few features not working on the portal. Are we expecting an extension as the September 30 deadline for filing ITR?

Chadha: If you have everything available, then you should file it. Yes, some features might be not working but filing is possible. You can wait till September 20/25. You can talk to your lawyer and fill in a timely manner.

Uddesh Verma, Mathura: I am 21 years old and just started working with an annual salary of 3 lakhs. My father is insisting to contact a CA, but I am keen to file an ITR myself. Please guide me.

Chadha: Yes, you should file it on your own. If it is just a salary return then you can definitely file on your own. You can seek the help of a CA if you are stuck somewhere. If the income is less than Rs 2.5 lakh then there is no need to file the return. If the income is between Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 5 lakh then you have to file the return but the tax will not be deducted.
