Tata Motors, the only Indian company to have a consignment of five-star safety vehicles launched their iconic SUV of the nineties in an all-new avatar. This SUV was unveiled by the company on Republic Day.  Tata Motors launches its iconic flagship SUV – the all-new Safari at an ex-showroom price of Rs 14.69 lakh moving upside to Rs 21.45 lakh. The new Safari 2.0 is built on the design language adding in the legacy of the Safari brand which has played a leading role in shaping the Indian SUV market.

With the Indian passenger vehicles market moving further towards the SUV segment, homegrown auto major Tata Motors is gearing up to cast a wider net in the segment targeting first-time buyers to premium-end customers while driving strength from its synergies with JLR, said a top company official.

Tata Motors chairman N Chandrasekaran said at the launch, “over the years the company has introduced various iconic brands like Sierra, Estate, Indica, and Nano. The recent launches of Nexon, Altroz, and Harrier with their distinctive attributes and features have brought in best-in-class standards of safety, design, and performance. The original Tata Safari is also such an iconic brand when it was launched in 1998.’’

Moving on to its specifications, the new Safari is based on the D8 platform from Land Rover which allows for further drive train enhancements including all-wheel drive and possibilities of electrification in the future. The company’s Harrier SUV is also based on the same D8 platform.

The second-gen Tata Safari shares its Omega Arc platform with the smaller Harrier SUV, it is 63mm longer and 80mm taller than the Harrier to fit in an extra row of seats. The Safari also has some common features with the Harrier in terms of its design, as the front end of the two SUVs is quite similar.

“Safari as our new flagship is connecting the aspirations of the discerning and evolved SUV customers. It is an impressive endorsement of our stated intent of enhancing presence in the faster-growing market segments,” Tata Motors MD and CEO Guenter Butschek said.

Tata Motors’ diesel engines are considered to be very powerful. In this SUV the company has given a 2.0 litre capacity kryotic turbo diesel engine which produces  170 PS of power. The engine is equipped with 6-speed manual and automatic transmission gearbox. It also has various other features like a panoramic sunroof, reclining second-row seats, ambient mood lighting, rear AC vents, multi-drive modes among others.

Safari has been rolled out in XE, XM, XT, XT+, XZ, XZ +, and adventure editions. The company claims that the car gives 14.8 kmpl mileage with automatic transmission. The new car will be available in 6 and 7 seater options. It will also have the largest sunroof in the segment. Tata Safari will compete with the new generation Mahindra XUV500, 7-seater Hyundai Creta, MG Hector Plus, Toyota Innova Crysta.
