Covid 19 Pandemic has affected everyone showing the most difficult times. But even after this, things have been moving almost inline now. Looking at the passenger vehicle(PV) segment, Indian cars recorded continuous growth in the last six months. Here are the top 10 selling cars to look at the numbers who have helped the PV market in the speedy recovery from the tragedy especially Maruti and Hyundai who spread in the list.

Maruti Suzuki India Limited was leading and it continues its leadership position in New Year too. In January 2021 Maruti Suzuki posted 1,39,002 unit sales as against 1,39,844 units during the same month in 2020. Maruti Suzuki had 7 of its models in the top 10 car sales list in the past month. However, it was only the WagonR and Brezza that noted positive sales with all other models reporting de-growth.

At No.1 was the Maruti Alto with sales of 18,260 units on January 21, down 3.46% as against 18,914 units sold in Jan 20. At No. 2 was the Swift of which the company sold 17,180 units in the past month, down from 19,981 units sold in Jan 20. WagonR sales increased by 12.69% giving the third position in the list by selling 17,165 units, up from 15,232 units sold in Jan 2020.

Maruti’s  Baleno and DZire at Nos. 4 and 5 on the list of top 10 cars sold last month with each of this reporting de-growth. DZire sales fell significantly by 32.50 percent to 15,125 units in Jan 21, down from 22,406 units sold in Jan 20. Maruti Suzuki Eeco and Brezza came in lower down the order at Nos.8 and 10.

“This is the highest ever demand-supply mismatch, the difference has never been this high. Due to which customers are shifting their preferences which is affecting the sales of on-demand vehicles.” says, Vinkesh Gulati, President of the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

Hyundai Creta, Venue, NIOS gets their place at Nos. 6, 7, and 9 on the list of top 10 cars sold in India in Jan 21. Each of these three models posted outstanding growth in the past month. Creta compact SUV sales increased 78.03% to 12,284 units while Hyundai Venue subcompact SUV sales were up by 74.94% to 11,779 units in the past month, up from 6,733 units sold in Jan 20.

Maruti has topped the list counting in with their seven variant even after recording year-on-year decline including Swift, Baleno, DZire, and Eeco. Of course, while Maruti Suzuki cars in India dominated the list of best-selling cars in January 2021, there is one other company that found mention here: Hyundai. The South Korean automaker’s Creta SUV, Venue SUV, and Grand i10 NIOS were the only names besides Maruti Suzuki models on this list.

This list certainly means great news for Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai, having the largest market under their roof.
