Best-selling cars have a waiting period of up to 24 weeks while Eeco ambulance has a waiting period of more than a year
Ahmedabad: The Indian automobile industry is going through difficult times as India is in the midst of a severe second wave of COVID-19. Major auto companies have announced temporary shutdown of their production units due to localised lockdown implemented by state governments.
While the manufacturing units that are working are either facing oxygen shortage as the supply has been shifted to hospitals or impacted due to limited manpower and a shortage of auto components.
Auto companies like Maruti Suzuki, MG Motors, Toyota, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI), and Hero Motocorp have shut their major production units. While Ashok Leyland, also plans to scale down production and operate plants for only 7-15 days in the month of May.
The cut down in production will impact delivery schedules and increase the waiting period of the vehicles that are high in demand.
Maruti Suzuki has shut its Haryana-based plants from May 1 to May 9 for annual maintenance. The parent company Suzuki Motor Corporation also paused operations of its Gujarat-based plant during the same period.
Various Maruti cars are now witnessing a waiting period of up to 3.5 months while best-selling Hyundai cars are having a waiting period of up to 7 months. Maruti’s Eeco ambulance has a waiting period of more than one year as India is facing a huge health crisis.
