Telangana has emerged as the richest state in the country, in terms of per-capita income, noted a recent report highlighting the state’s economic development. Out of its 33 districts, Ranga Reddy registered the highest per capita income on current prices, with Rs 6,69,102 , followed by Hyderabad (Rs 3,49,061) and Jayashankar (Rs 2,15,612). Overall, Telangana’s average per capita income stood at Rs 3.17 lakh, which is higher than the national average of Rs 1.46 lakh. 

This is a marked departure from its 11th position in terms of per-capita income in 2014-15, when it was formed. The districts which recorded the lowest per-capita income in the state were Kumuram Bheem (Rs 1,31,843) and Vikarabad (Rs 1,31,962). 

Additionally, the report also noted that this income distribution was equitable, as highlighted in the NFHS 2019-21 report. The state was ranked first in this regard. 

As per the NFHS 2019-21 report, the state ranks 1st among all states (along with Tamil Nadu and Kerala) in terms of equitable income distribution.

In fact, estimates suggest that the doubling of an individual’s income in Telangana takes 5-6 years, as opposed to the national timeframe of 8-9 years. 

The state also noted  impressive growth figures in terms of its per capita development expenditure and rise in the state’s gross state domestic product (GSDP). At Rs 26,897, the state outpaced the national average of Rs 20,233 in terms of developmental expenditure accrued to each individual. 

According to its provisional advance estimates, it also registered a 15.6% growth in its GSDP in 2022-23, which is higher than the country’s GDP growth rate of 15.4%. Currently, the state accounts for 5% of national GDP.
