India Inc may have had enough of WFH: Indeed report

Survey indicates Indian companies are not too comfortable with the 'Work From Home' culture and would rather like to work from office.

As much as you’d like to believe that sitting on a comfy couch at home with snacks on your table and sunlight sprawling your laptop screens could be the best possible way to work, it probably won’t bring you much good – or so does most of India Inc feel according to a recent survey conducted by employment website Indeed India.

The report titled, India’s Job Market: The Pandemic & White-Collar Migration, revealed as many as 70% employers will discontinue working from home post-pandemic while 59% employers don’t favour this work culture in the new normal.

“Of all Indian companies surveyed, 67% large and 70% mid-size ones — as opposed to 60% large and 34% mid-size, globally — are not in favour of a post-pandemic remote working set-up,” survey data shared with The Economic Times revealed.

Calling remote working an ‘equaliser’, Indeed India’s managing director Sashi Kumar pointed at the future of WFH in India.

“Remote work has served as an equaliser, pushing companies to reorganise their work models. However, in an emerging market like ours, where culture outweighs convenience and problem-solving is far more effective when people come together, it will be interesting to watch how this plays out as we progress towards recovery,” Kumar was quoted in the report.

The lockdown forced many, including daily wage workers, to shift back to their hometowns as surviving city life with no job guarantee seemed inevitable last year.

However, the survey found 46% employees betting that the trend of reverse migration is temporary. Almost 50% employees said they were willing to return back to the city if the job demands while 9% declined the idea of moving back to the metros declaring their preference to stay back in their native.
With several ideas cropping up in terms of how the future working style would shape, majority of the employers feel a ‘blended/hybrid’ model could be a possible way out.
This survey was conducted on a sample size of 1,200 employees and 600 employers.
