Here’s a look at India’s famous cultural festivals

India is a huge and diverse country. With every state having its own culture and traditions, it is interesting to see the number of cultural festivals that are celebrated with fervour.

While it may not be possible to list every festival, here are some that have gained popularity among tourists and people in those states look forward to.

1. Pushkar fair

The annual Pushkar fair is a nine-day festival in which thousands of camels and horses are traded. The fair is a big source of business for the local business community and tourism industry. The festival attracts tourists from all over the world.

2. Rann Utsav

Also known as the Kutch Mahotsav, it takes place in Kutch. Makeshift tents are set up for tourists. Kite flying, camel ride and desert safari are some of the major attractions.

3. Hornbill Festival

It is celebrated by the people of Nagaland and is held every year from December 1 to 10. The Hornbill Festival is held at Naga Heritage Village, Kisama which is about 12 km from Kohima.

4. Jaisalmer Desert Festival

The famous desert festival showcases the folk culture of Rajasthan. It is held in February each year. Top artists from across the state perform in this festival.

5.  Losar Festival

The three-day long festival is celebrated on the first day of the lunisolar Tibetan calendar. Losar predates the arrival of Buddhism in Tibet and has its roots in a winter incense-burning custom of the Bon religion.
