Does your Corona Kavach Policy cover treatment for fungal infection?

A lot of people have taken corona-specific policy. But one should understand that black fungus is not a Covid-19 infection

Despite relentless efforts put forth by governments and health staff, India suffered its harshest during the second wave of Covid-19. In the midst of this pandemic, fungal infections also resurfaced that created another healthcare challenge.

While the medical cost of treating Covid itself seemed paramount to most of us, the added expenditure of fungal infections just made things worse. The situation retriated the importance of health insurance.

Covid-specific plans

Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) directed all insurers in 2020 to issue short-term Covid specific insurance plans for individuals and families looking out for health insurance coverage due to Covid-19. These include the likes of Corona Rakshak and Corona Kavach policies.

But with the emergence of subsequent diseases like black fungus and white fungus infection in many Covid patients, people were left confused if these  will cover expenses for the same.

Black fungus is not Covid-19 infection

In a recent episode of Money9 Helpline, Tushar Kapoor, resident of New Delhi raised a similar concern.

“I have a Corona Kavach policy. I cannot afford any other health insurance policy at present and I don’t have any other policy. Do I need to buy a separate policy for fungal infection?” Kapoor asked.

A lot of people have taken corona-specific policy. But one should understand that black fungus is not a Covid-19 infection.

“Fungal infection is a separate disease, which might happen post-Covid-19 infection. Therefore, Corona Kavach policy does not cover black fungus or such infections. But a comprehensive health insurance will cover it,” Amit Chhabra of Policybazaar.com clarified.

For affordability, there are a lot of plans available that will help you buy a comprehensive health insurance policy. You can consider buying on EMI, wherein you don’t have to pay the whole amount at once, he added further.

A comprehensive health insurance policy covers treatment for black and white fungus infection. The policy will cover any hospitalisation related expenditure, post-hospitalisation treatment, etc. It will also cover all the consumables, medicines, etc.

The home treatment for a disease is covered under domiciliary hospitalisation, which most of the comprehensive policy covers.

“In a domiciliary hospitalisation a patient could not be hospitalized due to unavailability of hospital beds or other valid reasons. But to claim this requirement for hospitalization of the patient is mandatory,” Chhabra said.
