National Doctors’ Day: 9 FAQs on Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package

There’s no better time and day than National Doctors’ Day to show our gratitude towards health workers who have been at the forefront in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

To ensure their safety the government announced Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package (PMGKP) in 2020, which later got extended for one year with effect from April 20, 2021, with an aim to provide the insurance cover so that their family remains protected in case of any adversity due to Covid-19. This 1st July 2021 when the country has been emerging from the devastating second wave of Covid 19, we answer 9 frequently asked questions relating to PMGKP:

1) What is Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package (PMGKP)?

PMGKP is an insurance cover for health workers to protect them against the loss of life due to Covid-19. It also covers accidental death on account of Covid-19 related duty.

2) How much cover does it provide?

The scheme offers the cover of Rs 50 lakh to the family of the insurer. The entire amount of premium for this scheme is borne by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

3) Is there any age-limit for health workers under this scheme?

It covers all health workers irrespective of their age bracket. There’s no age limit for this scheme.

4) Who all are covered under the scheme?

-Public healthcare providers including community health workers, who may have to be in direct contact and care of Covid-19 patients and who may be at risk of being impacted by this.

-Private hospital staff and retired, volunteer, local urban bodies, contracted or daily wage, ad-hoc, outsourced staff requisitioned by States, Central hospitals, autonomous hospitals of Central/ States/UTs, AIIMS and INIs/ hospital of Central Ministries can also be drafted for Covid-19 related responsibilities

– Volunteers are those who are drafted by the Government Official authorized by Central/State/ UT Government for care and may have come in direct contact of the Covid-19 patient

5) Is individual enrolment required?

No enrolment is not required. Eligible candidates get covered automatically.

6) Does one require to pay the premium?

The entire amount of premium for this scheme is being borne by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

7) Is the Covid-19 test mandatory for claiming the benefit?

A laboratory report is mandatory for claiming insurance amount in case of loss of life on account of Covid-19. However, it is not required in case of accidental loss of life on account of Covid-19 related duty.

8) What are the documents required to claim benefits in case of loss of life?

-Claim form duly filled and signed by the nominee/claimant. -Identity proof of Deceased (Certified copy) -Identity proof of the Claimant (Certified copy) -Proof of relationship between the Deceased and the Claimant (Certified copy) -Laboratory Report certifying having tested Positive for COVID-19 (in Original or Certified copy) -Death summary by the Hospital where death occurred (in case death occurred in hospital) -Death Certificate (in Original) -Certificate by the Healthcare Institution/ organization/ office that the deceased was an employee of /engaged by the institution and was deployed/drafted for care and may have come in direct contact of the COVID-19 patient. For community health care workers, the Certificate should be from Medical Officer of Primary Health Centre (PHC) that ASHA/ASHA Facilitator was drafted for work related to COVID-19.

9) What are the documents required in case of accidental loss of life? 

-Claim form duly filled and signed by the claimant. -Identity proof of deceased (Certified copy) -Identity proof of the claimant (Certified copy) -Proof of relationship between the deceased and the claimant (Certified copy) -Death summary by the hospital where the death occurred (in case death occurred in hospital) (Certified copy). -Death certificate (in Original) -Post-mortem report (Certified copy) -Cancelled cheque (desirable) (in Original) -FIR (Certified copy) -Certificate by the Healthcare Institution/ organization/ office that the deceased was an employee of /engaged by the institution and had an accidental loss of life on account of Covid-19 related duty.
