For the government, 500 rupee notes are becoming a problem. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released a fresh report on counterfeit notes in the country. In the financial year 2023, a total of 2,25,000 fake notes were seized. Out of these, 4.6% were seized by the RBI, while 95.4% were seized during transactions in banks. The worrying fact is that the number of fake 500 rupee notes seized has increased by more than 14% compared to the previous year. In such a scenario, if you have a 500 rupee note in your pocket, immediately check it. RBI has identified a total of 17 key points to recognise fake notes, which can help you identify genuine and fake 500 rupee notes.

Here’s how you can identify them:

1. When you place the note in front of a light, you will see the number 500 written on it.
2. Place the note at a 45-degree angle in direct light, and you will see the number 500 written on it, which is not visible from the front.
3. The denomination value of 500 will be written in Devanagari script on the note.
4. The photograph of Mahatma Gandhi will be in the centre of the note.
5. The letters “Bharat” and “India” will be written on it.
6. When you slightly tilt the note, the color of the security thread will change from green to blue.
7. Compared to old notes, on the new notes, the signature of the Governor, promise clause, guarantee clause, and the RBI logo have been shifted to the right side.
8. An electrotype watermark will be visible along with Mahatma Gandhi’s photo.
9. Large numbers will be visible on the top left and bottom right sides of the note.
10. There is an image of the Ashoka Pillar on the right side.
11. There is a language panel in the center.
12. The note has a picture of the Red Fort with the Indian flag.
