Have Rs 2,000 notes? Just send via post to RBI
"We encourage customers to send Rs 2,000 notes through the insured post to the RBI for direct credit in their account in the most seamless and secure manner. This (will) save them from the hassle of travelling to specified branches and standing in queue," RBI Regional Director Rohit P Das said.
RBI Regional Director Rohit P Das has said that people can send Rs 2,000 banknotes to RBI regional offices through post. Money equivalent to number of Rs 2,000 bank notes sent via post will be credited to the sender’s bank account. RBI has taken this step to provide people relief from standing in long queues in front of the regional offices in 19 cities . But from now onwards, citizens can just send the Rs 2,000 currency notes they have with them to RBI’s regional offices by India Post or even by any other private courier but the parcel should be insured.
“We encourage customers to send Rs 2,000 notes through the insured post to the RBI for direct credit in their account in the most seamless and secure manner. This (will) save them from the hassle of travelling to specified branches and standing in queue,” RBI Regional Director Rohit P Das said. He added that the options of sending money via post are highly secured. There should not be any fear in the mind of the public.
One will just have to pay the postage, registration and insurance charges to send the banknotes via post office.

Currently, there are 19 different regional offices of the apex bank where you can send the banknotes via post. These are in following cities:
Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram.
Facilities at RBI’s Delhi regional office:
The Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das said the regional office in Delhi will provide basic conveniences like water, covered waiting area etc.
Since, October 8, 2023, citizens are required to deposit Rs 2,000 currency notes at regional offices of the apex bank. There is a separate queue for those coming with less number of such currency notes for faster disposal. Special arrangements have been made for senior citizens and ‘divyangjan’ by providing a separate queue for them.
On May 19, the RBI announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 denomination bank notes from circulation. More than 97 per cent of the Rs 2,000 banknotes in circulation as of May 19, 2023, have since been returned.
The Rs 2,000 banknotes were introduced in November 2016, following the demonetisation of the then-prevailing Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 banknotes.
