Chandigarh cuts VAT on petrol, diesel; Himachal and Haryana follow suit

The Chandigarh administration has announced a reduction of Rs 7 per litre in Value-Added Tax (VAT) on fuels making them cheaper in the union territory. This comes after the Centre slashed excise duty on petrol and diesel. An official statement said that, “after the Centre cut levy on petrol and diesel, Chandigarh Administration has reduced VAT by Rs 7 on petrol and diesel with effect from midnight of November 4”.
The percentage of VAT on petrol has been cut from 22.45% to 15.24% and from 14.02% to 6.66% on diesel, a notification from the Department of Excise and Taxation, Union Territory of Chandigarh said on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Shironmani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal has urged the Charanjit Singh Channi-led Congress government to cut the VAT rate on petrol and diesel to provide relief to consumers.
His tweet read, “high fuel prices have been eating into the Pbis pocket. Center’s late reduction of rates is a half measure! On behalf of SAD & Punjab, I demand that CM @CHARANJITCHANNI take note from other states & reduce sky high petrol and diesel prices by Rs 10. Punjab has suffered enough”!

Haryana and Himachal Pradesh cut VAT on fuels
The Haryana government had also announced a reduction in VAT on Thursday, which has made petrol and diesel cheaper by Rs 12 per litre. The reduction comes as a major relief to the common man in the BJP-JJP-ruled state.
Through a notification on Thursday, the Himachal government said that the VAT on petrol and diesel has been cut by 7.5% and 8% respectively. After the reduction, petrol will be cheaper by Rs 12 per litre and diesel by Rs 17 per litre in the state.

On Wednesday evening, the central government announced a cut in the excise duty of Rs 5 and Rs 10 on petrol and diesel. The centre had urged states to reduce VAT on petrol and diesel to give relief to consumers.
