Ford India’s workers seek government help for job safety: Report
Ford's announcement which came out of the blue, will affect the livelihoods of 2,600 permanent workers and over 1,000 contract staffs
In a bid to safeguard jobs, workers at the Ford Motor Company’s plant at Sriperumbadur in Chennai have sought the help of the Tamil Nadu government, according to a report by news agency Reuters. The company, last week said that it would stop making cars in India, taking a blow of around $2 billion after years of losses in a market that promised exponential growth at one point, has been a disappointment. Ford’s announcement which came out of the blue, will affect the livelihoods of 2,600 permanent workers and over 1,000 contract workers, according to union members.
Union wants new jobs created
In a letter addressed to the minister TM Anbarasan, the Chennai Ford Employees Union said that thousands of workers are at the peril of losing their jobs, due to the automaker’s decision to shut its Chennai factory.
Further, the union also wants new jobs to be created by the minister, so that they could earn money and ensure that their livelihoods would be safeguarded.
On Monday, the Centre for Indian Trade Union also protested against the management of the company and the Indian government.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Make in India policy was also questioned in the poster announcing the protest which had proposed to increase manufacturing jobs in India.
