Former attorney general Soli Sorabjee passes away due to covid-19

The former attorney general and constitutional law expert Soli Sorabjee passed away on Friday morning after getting infected with COVID-19, as per the information received from the family sources. Born to a Parsi family in Mumbai, Sorabjee completed his law studies from St. Xavier’s College and Government Law College, in Mumbai. He was admitted to the bar in 1953.
The 91-year-old had served as the attorney general for India from 1989-90 and then from 1998-2004. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan for his defense of the freedom of expression and the protection of human rights in March 2002. An eminent jurist, Sorabjee had worked on the Citizen’s Justice Committee which represented pro bono the 1984 anti-Sikh riots victims.
He has been a pivotal figure in the Indian judicial system and has appeared for some of the most significant cases- Keshavananda Bharati, Maneka Gandhi, S.R. Bommai, I.R. Coelho, etc.
