Maruti Suzuki’s overall production declines 8% due to chip shortage

Maruti Suzuki India reported its total production in August declined by 8% to 1,13,937 units on a yearly basis, as semiconductor shortage affected its manufacturing schedules. The country’s largest carmaker said in a regulatory filing that it had produced a total of 1,23,769 units in the year-ago period. The company noted that the production volume was affected due to electronic components shortage. On August 31, the auto major had announced that it expects total vehicle production in September across its plants in Haryana and Gujarat would be just 40% of the normal output due to the semiconductor shortage.

In July, the total production had risen by 58% on a yearly basis to 1,70, 719 units. Suzuki Motor Gujarat (SMG) which supplies cars exclusively to Maruti Suzuki India has decided to to scale down production to single shift at some manufacturing lines in the plant.

Decline across segments

In August 2020, Maruti Suzuki India said its total passenger vehicle production stood at 1,21,381 units. Last month its production was at 1,11, 368 units.

Production of small cars such as Alto and S-Presso stood at 20,332 units last month as against 22,208 units a year ago.

It also said that manufacturing of compact cars, comprising WagonR, Celerio, Ignis, Swift, Baleno and Dzire, declined to 47,640 units from 67,348 units as compared to year ago.

However, production of utility vehicles like Gypsy, Ertiga, S-Cross, Vitara Brezza and XL6, increased to 29,965 units last month from 21,737 units in the corresponding month of 2020.

Eeco van’s production for August 2021 was reported at 10,430 units, as compared to 8,898 units in the corresponding month last year.

Maruti’s light commercial vehicle Super Carry production stood at 2,569 units last month, as against 2,388 units in the same time period last year, the company said.
