Excessive waterlogging had disrupted operations at Bhandup water complex, due to which water supply across Mumbai had been hit. In response to this the BMC had asked residents to boil water before drinking.

As water entered the Bhandup pumping station, operations were disrupted badly. Several parts of the city did not receive water on Sunday. Officials from BMC claimed they were working round the clock to restore the water supply.

No water meant that housing societies were forced to get water from tankers. There were reported incidents of water tankers charging exorbitant rates to supply water on Sunday.

Pumping complex inundated

While speaking with Times of India a BMC official said that the torrential downpour had left the Bhandup water pumping complex area inundated with rainwater that had led to the closure of the filtrations and drainage plants at the water purification centre. This had resulted in the disruption of water supply in most parts of Mumbai on Sunday. Also, people should boil the water before drinking once the water supply is restored.

The official had also added that they are taking efforts to restore the city’s water supply by restarting the water purification system in the complex.

Boil water before drinking

While elaborating the situation, the official said that the heavy rains in Bhandup, had forced water to enter into filtration and pumping plant which had led to a technical problem. Due to this water supply had been severely disrupted in most parts of Mumbai, which mainly include the city, western suburbs and partially in the eastern suburbs. As a precautionary measure power supply had to be cut off.

BMC also said that the drinking water supply system in the complex would be restarted in the next few hours. But would take longer for the filtration system to be restored. So, once water supply is back people should boil water before drinking.
