Petrol, diesel prices hold steady for 7th day in row; check rates in top 10 cities

The auto fuel prices were last changed on March 30, when petrol fell by 22 paise per litre and diesel slipped by 23 paise

Petrol prices have already crossed the Rs 100-mark in more than 20 states and union territories - Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Jammu & Kashmir, Odisha, Manipur, Ladakh, Bihar, Punjab and others. Petrol and diesel prices get revised in India every day at 6 am.

Prices of petrol and diesel have been steady for a week now. On April 6, 2021, a litre of petrol in Delhi would cost you Rs 90.56, while diesel would cost you Rs 80.87, according to data available on the Indian Oil Corporation’s website.

Petrol prices in Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata stood at Rs 96.98, Rs 92.58 and Rs 90.77 per litre, respectively, unchanged from the previous levels.

Diesel prices in Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai stood at Rs 80.87, Rs 87.96, Rs 85.88 and Rs 83.75 per litre, respectively. The auto fuel prices were last revised on March 30, when petrol fell by 22 paise per litre and diesel by 23 paise.

Fuel prices differ from state to state as taxes get levied on them by both central as well as state governments along with the freight charges.

Due to VAT, excise duty among other levies the retail price of petrol and diesel differs from state to state. These taxes make up to 60 per cent of the retail selling price of petrol and over 54 per cent of diesel. Centre levies Rs 32.90 per litre of excise duty on petrol and Rs 31.80 a litre on diesel, while VAT varies in different states.

Prices change every morning: Petrol and diesel prices are revised every day at 6 o’clock by the oil marketing companies. The change depends upon the crude prices in the international market. In last three months petrol has become expensive by around 7 rupees per litre, while diesel price have increased by Rs 7.60 per litre.

Here are the ways to check the prices: You can get the rates of petrol and diesel in your city through SMS. For example, to find out the price of Indian Oil, customers in Delhi will have to type in the message box- RSP 102072 (RSP <space> Dealer Code of Petrol Pump) and send it to number 9224992249. Similarly, type RSP 108412 for Mumbai, RSP 119941 for Kolkata and RSP 133593 for Chennai and send it to number 9224992249. And, you will get the latest rates on your mobile.
