Petrol price goes past Rs 100-mark in Mumbai, check rates in other cities

This is the 15th hike since May 4 when the state-owned oil firms ended an 18-day hiatus in rate revision

Fuel prices rose on May 29 after a with petrol breaching the Rs 100-mark in Mumbai  and diesel at Rs 92.17 a litre.

After today’s revision, a litre of petrol in Delhi is available for Rs 93.94 and diesel for Rs 84.89, according to Indian Oil Corporation, the country’s largest fuel retailer.

Petrol price has increased by Rs 3.53 so far in May while diesel has surged Rs 4.18 a litre. This is the 15th hike since May 4 when the state-owned oil firms ended an 18-day hiatus in rate revision.

Soaring fuel prices

Petrol prices have already crossed the Rs 100-mark in parts of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Sri Ganganagar district of Rajasthan has the costliest petrol and diesel in the country at Rs 104.94 per litre and Rs 97.79 a litre, respectively. Indore, Bhopal, Gwalior, Jaisalmer, Jaipur, Banswara, Ratnagiri, Parbhani and Aurangabad are also few cities selling auto fuel above Rs 100 mark.

Different tax structures

Fuel prices differ from state to state depending on the incidence of local taxes such as VAT and freight charges.  Central and state taxes make up for 60% of the retail selling price of petrol and over 54% of diesel. The union government levies Rs 32.90 per litre of excise duty on petrol. Rajasthan levies the highest value-added tax (VAT) on petrol in the country, followed by Madhya Pradesh.

For diesel, the central add excise duty up to Rs 31.83 and VAT to Rs 10.99. Besides, the price also includes a dealer commission of a minimum of Rs 2.6 per litre on petrol and Rs 2 on diesel. Any changes in fuel rates are implemented with effect from 6 am each day.
