Automakers gearing up for festive season sales

Encouraged by healthy growth in sales for July, automobile companies have started up stocking vehicles at their dealerships across India ahead of the festive season. The development comes amid the easing of lockdown restrictions by state governments and a declining number of fresh Covid-19 cases.

The four-wheeler segment

The month of June and July were good for carmakers in terms of sales with most of them recording a robust growth on a year-on-year basis. Maruti Suzuki reported sales of 1,33,273 cars, which was up 36.8% compared to July 2020. Higher sales of compact and sub-impact cars– Swift, Dzire, and Brezza– gave a major push to the overall growth of Maruti Suzuki’s sales numbers.

Hyundai sold 48,042 cars, which was 25.8% higher compared to the same month last year. Creta, Grandi10, and i20 witnessed good sales figures.

Tata Motors recorded more than double growth and secured the third spot in this list. Tata sold 30,185 cars, which is more than double the 15,012 cars it sold in July 2020.

Two-Wheeler segment

Bajaj Auto reported a growth in sales, in both two-wheelers well as commercial vehicles segments. The domestic sales of two-wheelers saw a minuscule 2 % growth on a year-on-year basis with the sale of 1,56,232 units in July. The exports segment saw a 103% increase. In July, 1,74,337units were sent out of India as compared to 86,082 units in July 2020. The total sales in this segment stood at 3,30,569 units, up 39% from July last year.

TVS reported an overall growth of 10% in sales in July 2021. This July, the company sold 2,78,855 units as compared to 2,52,744 units last July. The two-wheeler sales in the domestic market during the period under review, however, fell by 7.6% to 1,75,169 units from 1,89,647 units in July 2020. The company performed well in the exports game and registered a growth of 65%, with overall sales of 1,03,133units vs 62,839 units in July 2020.

Hero MotoCorp saw a decline in sales in July. It sold 4,54,308 units, which was 12.63% lower than the sales figures of July 2020. The company sold 4,24,126 motorbikes and 30,272 scooters. The hero, however, saw substantial growth of 233% in its exports. In July, the company exported 25,190 units as compared to 7,563 last July.
