Covid-19 vaccination: Here are India’s top-performing states

It has been eight months since India’s nationwide vaccination drive was started. Given the enormous size of the eligible population and the intricacies of the demography, this 8-month period has seen a lot of progress. Close to half of the eligible adult population have received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine and 90% of it is made up of people aged 60 years and above.

However, India should quickly take cognizance of the potency of new Covid-19 variants and learn from the experience of the deadly second wave of the pandemic. The vaccination drive must be ramped up at the earliest so that herd immunity is achieved and only then a potential third wave could be averted in the near future.

In addition to that, India’s vaccination coverage is still quite low as compared to the United States and the United Kingdom, which are now deliberating over rolling out additional booster shots.

Top 9 states

With regard to the size of the population, the vaccination coverage across the states has been quite uneven so far. Populous states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal which have an ample adult population have administered at least one dose to just one-third of the people.

Maharashtra, which at one point was the worst-hit state, has provided at least one dose to over 40% of its adult population. National capital Delhi has fared well and has given at least one dose to over 56% of its people.

The southern state of Kerala, which has been seen maximum daily additions has done a good job in terms of vaccination. More than 68% of the state’s adult population has received at least one jab.

Here are the top nine states in terms of vaccination coverage:

1. Himachal Pradesh- 92%

50 lakh out of 55 lakh people have received at least 1 dose

2. Uttarakhand- 70.2%

56 lakh out of 80 lakh people have received at least 1 dose

3. Kerala- 68.1%

1.8 crore out of 2.6 crore people have received at least 1 dose

4. Gujarat – 63.9%

3.1 crore out of 4.8 people have received at least 1 dose

5. J&K – 59.9%

56 lakh out 94 lakh people have received at least 1 dose

6. Madhya Pradesh- 58.7%

3.2 crore people out of 5.4 crore have received at least 1 dose

7. Rajasthan – 56.6%

2.6 crore out of 5.1 crore people have received at least 1 dose

8. Delhi- 56.2 %

84 lakh out of 1.5 crore people have received at least 1 dose

9. Karnataka- 55.9 %

2.7 crore out of 4.8 crore people have received at least 1 dose
